South Korea: Yongdu-am And Dokkaebi Road

Our tour package included a domestic flight to Jeju Island which lies in the south.

When we were in Seoul, Jeson kept promoting the island which is the favorite residence by many South Korean retirees and an ideal honeymoon venue for many South Korean newly married couples. He also assured us that we would definitely see fewer cars and people than in the capital.

When we arrived there on our fifth day, it was late afternoon. A new driver was on duty for us. He had a much easier job than the one who had transported us everywhere during the past five days in Korean Peninsula as the road traffic in whole Jeju Island was as smooth as the air traffic.

Our first destination was Yongdu-am. We paced down along a path

to see the famous rock resembling the head of a dragon.

Next, we headed to Dokkaeibi Road. Our bus slowed down and stopped in the middle of the apparently uphill road. Then Jeson asked all of us to pay attention to the driver's leg which was not stepping on the gas. Instead of rolling downwards, our bus moved forward automatically!

People who passed by with their vehicles liked to do experiments on this mysterious road. When we came down from the bus, a few of us also ran to and fro to experience the difference of the speed.

Actually it was a result of an optical illusion in which the lower part looked higher because of its surrounding environment.

The landscape and fresh air reminded me of my outings with Nicole and Ernest by bicycle in France. I wondered if they were now paddling leisurely somewhere in the countryside.
